Elvira Eunice Erika Thurn nee Mohr

April 10, 1933 – April 29, 2023

Elvira was born in Weyburn, Sask. The fifth child of Rev. Peter and Hertha Mohr. The family moved to Calgary in 1939. Elvira grew up in Bridgeland and graduated from Crescent Heights High School. She attended Henderson Business College and began working at the Foothills Bookstore. She was very involved in the Luther League (youth group) where she met Norman Thurn. They were married July 30, 1954. They moved to Norman’s farm near Beiseker where they raised their family. They had 5 children and were very involved in the community and the church.  In 1990 they moved to an acreage near Balzac where they retired to a very busy life. They were famous for their hospitality, acceptance, generosity, and love. Ask anyone about the infamous barbeques or any of the children and grandchildren they “heart” adopted.

Her faith was her rock and comfort and she believed her whole life that being a servant to others was the best way to show God’s love and mercy.

Elvira loved to cross stitch, read, and sing. She was a member of the Airdrie Community Choir for over 30 years. She loved to be outside, usually in her garden. She had very strong opinions, a wonderfully dry sense of humor, and she could knock a baseball over the tree line.

Elvira will be dearly missed by her children: Tim (Marjorie) Thurn, Donna (Al) Mikl, and Peter (Christine) Thurn, Daughter-in-law Vicki Thurn. Others who will dearly miss her are: Ron (Wendy) Coughlan, her siblings: Armin (Bev) Mohr, Grace Rosa and Marilyn (George) Haugen, 12 grandchildren, 7 greatgrandchildren, in-laws: Ralph (Rita) Thurn, Les Eros, Hedy Thurn, nieces, nephews, her extended family, and many other people whom she loved and who loved her back.

Elvira is predeceased by the love of her life: Norman (2016), two of her children: Wendy Colgate (2010), Doug Thurn (2021), Son-in-law; Phil Colgate (2020): Her parents, 4 siblings: Herlanda, Randolph, Guenther, and Lois Mohr, 2 grandchildren: Kurt Thurn and Joshua Campbell, many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
